Full Update: Tragedy Befalls Onitsha As Fire Spread Through Upper Iweka Down To Ochanga Destroying Countless Houses And Lives (Videos, Photos)



Tragedy Befalls Onitsha, Anambra State.

On Wednesday, 16th October, around 12pm, a truck conveying premium motor spirit (pms) lost control and rammed into the fence of Toronto Hospital, Upper-Iweka, Onitsha.

It was gathered that the tanker lost control and fell inside the drainage channel at MCC bus stop near Toronto Hospital, Upper-Iweka, Onitsha.

The driver's side of the Tanker pulled off and started to roll, it continued until it stopped at down fly over, Onitsha.




Consequently, the tanker started emitting liquid and there was a fire outbreak, the liquid kept flowing through the drainage channel, burning down many houses.

The fire caused serious tension and confusion as passengers, motorists and passersby ran for over their lives abandoning their vehicles. 




The fire outbreak which started from Upper Iweka, Onitsha continued to Ochanga, down to Amobi Market burning down so many residential buildings, shops and properties. 

According to witnesses, for 3 hours, no fire service showed up even after several attempts to reach them and no water Tanker was around the vicinity. 




They had to resort to using pure water to attempt to reduce the fire. 


By the time Asaba fire service got to the scene, alot of houses have been engulfed by the fire, surprisingly, the fire service turned back and fled the scene.




Reports later coming in from the fire service department claimed that they were attacked with the stones by angry traders for arriving late. 

Sadly, a mother and her child were burnt to death in the fire explosion.
