According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC, Nigeria has unfortunately recorded its first death from the devastating ongoing coronavirus pandemic
The public health agency on its Twitter handle @NCDCgov said the first Covid-19 death recorded is a 67 year old male who returned home following medical treatment in the UK.
The patient, Suleiman Achimugu, former managing director of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), died at 2am on Monday, 23rd March 2020.
Achimugu, a native of Kogi state, was said to have returned from the United Kingdom two weeks ago.
He was said to have started exhibiting the symptoms of the virus on Tuesday and the case was reported to the NCDC who took his blood sample for a test.
“The 1st #COVID19 death in Nigeria has been recorded. The case was a 67 year old male who returned home following medical treatment in UK"
“He had underlying medical conditions- multiple myeloma and diabetes and was undergoing chemotherapy. Our thoughts are with his family,”. NCDC added.
Mr. Suleiman Achimugu's family are currently under quarantine at home.
The Outbreak
The death is coming about an hour after the country confirmed five new cases of Covid-19 in the country.
Nigeria has a total of 35 confirmed cases, 32 active cases, two discharged and one death.
