Power Of The People: IGP Dissolves SARS After Widespread Protest (Photos, Details)

After days of nationwide protests against SARS brutality, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has announced the dissolution of the dreaded police formation, Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS or FSARS).

The IGP made the announcement on Sunday afternoon, 11th of October, during a press conference at the force headquarters in Abuja.

The SARS has been accused of

of brutality, extortion, unlawful arrests, torture  intimidation, harassment and murder of many young Nigerians and other human rights violations.

In the statement Muhammed Adamu said the unit had been abolished “with immediate effect”, a move that was “in response to the yearnings of the Nigerian people”.

He added, however, that all SARS officers would be redeployed to other police commands, formations and units, drawing condemnation by some activists online who pledged to keep up their campaign demanding accountability.
